City supports grassroots football

The City of Cape Town is supporting five grassroots football tournaments over the next three weeks – that’s more than 5 000 players in age groups from under six all the way to senior.
The action kicks off with the 14th edition of the Rygate Cubs Festival at the Johnston Road Sports Complex in Athlone, featuring 257 teams from 98 clubs – that’s approximately 2 800 youth football players.
Organised by the Rygate Football Association, the competition will see under six, under eight, under-10 and under-12 girls’ teams participate in a six-a-side format between 6 and 11 October 2025.
The City’s Events and Recreation and Parks Departments are providing support in the form of playing facilities and event services.
Games will start from 15:30 until late during the week and between 08:00 and 17:00 on the final day.
Tickets for the games are available at the gate from as little as R10.
Kapstadt Cup
From Wednesday, 8 October, the 14th edition of the Kapstadt Cup gets under way at four venues: Green Point Shared Fields, Hartleyvale Stadium, Wynberg Military Base and Athlone Stadium.
The tournament has evolved from a local grassroots festival into an internationally recognised event that attracts national and continental clubs.
This year, 134 teams will compete in 346 matches, representing 33 football clubs across nine age groups from under seven to under-23.
The likes of Mamelodi Sundowns FC, University of Pretoria, Gqeberha Saints (Gqeberha), Windhoek Sport Club, Julinho Athletic Academy (Namibia), Action International Academy (KZN), Bloemfontein City and Sportcolli FC (Mbombela) will join local and regional clubs in vying for top honours.

SAFA Cape Town Coke Cup Finals
On Saturday, 18 October, Athlone Stadium will host the finals of the country’s biggest amateur football tournament.
The preliminary rounds featured 580 men’s clubs, 340 youth teams and 82 women’s sides over six months of knockout action. The competition will conclude with six teams vying for the titles in the three categories: U18 Boys, Senior Ladies and Senior Men.
Now in its 30th year, the tournament has provided a platform for emerging talent across Cape Town.
Entry for the games at Athlone Stadium is available through Quicket from as little as R30. Tickets go on sale from 7 October.
Gates are expected to open from 12:30 with the first game scheduled for a 13:00 kick-off.
The City is also providing support to the Cape Town Tygerberg LFA Knockout Finals at Royal Road in Maitland on Saturday, 4 October as well as Clyde Pinelands FC’s Junior Fiesta Tournament taking place on 25 and 26 October.
